Supported Formats

Goviso supports most major video formats, including .asf, .mpg, .avi, .qt, .mov, .wmv, .dv, .mp4, and .3gp. Files uploaded in these formats will be automatically encoded by Goviso to a flash compatible format. Goviso uses On2 Technologies' VP6 codec to provide the highest quality encoding available for web video.

Client Side Encoding

To save time on uploading and server-side encoding, you can encode videos on your own computer first, but this requires separate software that Goviso does not provide. The following links provide more information:

Flix Pro is a stand-alone application available from On2 Technologies.

Flix Exporter is a plugin compatible with any QuickTime supported application such as: Quicktime Pro, Discreet Media Cleaner, Adobe After Effects, Apple Final Cut, and Apple Compressor.

Client Side Encoding Settings

  • File Type : VP6-E SWF
  • Encoding Mode : 2 Pass (higher quality)
  • Maximum Bitrate : 1000 kbps is recommended to maintain quality

Maximum Video Resolution

Although Goviso supports full HD resolution of 1920x1080, high resolution combined with long duration results in very large file sizes that can take a long time to download, and can cause playback issues on slower computers. A 30 second clip at 1920x1080 encodes to a manageable file size, but an 8 minute clip at that resolution does not.

For best results, we recommend a resolution around 400p wide for encoded videos longer than a few minutes. For shorter clips, 720p wide is the recommended limit that will download quickly and playback smoothly for all users in your project.

Duration Limit

Due to a constraint in frame-based flash video, duration is limited to 16000 frames or about 8.5 minutes at 30 frames per second. Videos that exceed this limit will not play back properly in Goviso.
